The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the department which carries out the jaw and face area related operations such as the normal and surgical extraction of teeth, embedded dental operations, implant placement, jaw cysts and tumors operations and reconstructions, preprostetic surgery operations, surgical treatment of jaw and facial fractures, orthognathic surgical operations and tmj. temporomandibular joint operations.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, in addition to all the embedded teeth in the mouth, includes surgical removal of cystic structures originating from the mouth and teeth, and corrections to the hard and soft tissues of the mouth to assist in prosthetic construction. It also includes the performance of the operations for jaw fractures and root end resections.
Ayrıca çene kırıkları ve kök ucu rezeksiyonları operasyonlarını gerçekleştirir.
Is dental implant suitable for everyone?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
YES, the most important criterion during implantation is that there is no systemic disturbance that prevents the implant from fusing with the bone and that there is sufficient bone support in the area to be implanted. However, if a disease that prevents systemic healing such as diabetes (diabetes) is kept under control by medications, it does not constitute an obstacle for implantation.
Is a surgical preparation necessary in the mouth before prosthesis is performed?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Some patients may require surgery prior to prosthesis, even if not necessary for every patient. Especially in patients who have lost their teeth a long time ago or who are older, there may not be a bone area in the mouth where the prosthesis will be fixed. Sometimes the old prosthesis may cause strokes or some irregularities in the mouth. Therefore, it will not be possible to take a healthy measure and make an appropriate prosthesis without correcting these conditions.
What should be done in case of any blow to the mouth, jaw and face area.
If there is no brain damage, the patient should be referred to a maxillofacial surgeon with suspicion of fractures in the mouth, jaw and facial bones. Necessary radiological examinations should be performed and if there are fractures in the jaw bones, the radiological treatment should be started immediately.
What is the most important mistake in the treatment of dental abscesses (infections)?
Tooth-sourced abscesses appear as inflammation-filled swellings inside or outside the mouth. These inflamed swellings should be surgically opened and the inflammation should be evacuated immediately. The patients often try to treat themselves using antibiotics alone, which makes treatment difficult because abscess is not drained.
How to perform intraoral surgery?
The oral surgery is carried out under the operating room conditions and in a sterile environment by people who are specialized in this field. The intraoral surgical interventions mostly carried out by local anesthesia, in other words by anesthetizing only the region of interest, can be sometimes performed by general anesthesia (narcosis) or sedation.
What is general anesthesia (narcosis) and sedation?
The general anesthesia is the type of anesthesia in which the patient is anesthetized in which the narcosis is achieved by injecting intravenous drugs and administering stun gas. It is mostly preferred in patients with fear and anxiety, mental retardation and in cases where local anesthesia is not sufficient. The sedation is the type of anesthesia in which only intravenous medications are given to the patient and sleepiness is provided. The sedation has no drug effect;therefore, local anesthesia is also applied to the patients to narcotize the surgical area.
